Let’s discuss the pros and cons of each so you can make an informed decision about which paint is best for your project.
Advantages and Disadvantages of All-In-One Paint
All-in-one furniture paints have become increasingly popular in recent years, and for good reason: they offer a number of advantages over traditional paints.
Advantages of All-in-One Paint
For starters, all-in-one paints have great adhesion, which means they adhere well to furniture surfaces. They usually don’t need a topcoat and are durable on their own.
All-in-one paints also come with built-in primers, so you might not need to apply a coat of primer before painting.
And because all-in-one paints are designed for use on furniture, they are specifically formulated to be fast-drying and easy to apply.
All of these things can save you time and hassle since you won’t have to buy as many products and supplies and go through as many steps when painting furniture.
Disadvantages of All-in-One Paint
However, all-in-one paints also have some disadvantages.
For starters, they are not all self-leveling, which means that if you brush the paint on, you will probably see brush marks in the paint when it’s dry.
All-in-one paints are also more expensive than some other types of paint.
And while all-in-one paints may be designed for use on furniture, they aren’t all the same; each brand has its own unique formulation, so it’s important to do your research before choosing one.
There isn’t a perfect paint out there; every type of paint has its pros and cons. So it’s important to think carefully about what you need from your paint before making a decision.

One of the best all-in-one paints out there is Heirloom Traditions Paint. It makes painting furniture and cabinets easy!
No primer or scuff sanding is required, and you don’t even need a topcoat. It dries to a beautiful satin sheen that won’t get dirty easily.

This paint can be applied with a sprayer, brush, or roller, so whatever tool you prefer to use on your project will work great.
With Heirloom Traditions paint, drying only takes half an hour to an hour, and it really sticks—it’s quite difficult to scratch it off once it has dried for a couple of days!

There are 30 colors available, but the coverage leaves something to be desired. And it definitely isn’t a self-leveling paint, so expect there to be brush marks or texture if using a brush or a roller.

Best All-In-One Paint for a Matte Finish
Fusion Mineral Paint
Fusion Mineral Paint is another great all-in-one paint for painting furniture. It can be used with a sprayer, brush, or roller and dries quickly. It dries into a durable hard finish without a topcoat.
It sticks very well, but I wouldn’t trust it to stick to laminate furniture without scuff, sanding, and priming. Here is a great post from them about how to prepare furniture for Fusion Mineral Paint.
They offer a large selection of colors – over 50 really pretty shades – so you’ll be able to easily find the perfect color for your project.
Fusion Mineral Paint is water-based, so you don’t have to worry about strong fumes, and cleaning it up is easy.
However, it has a matte sheen that I recommend top coating with either water-based polyurethane or wax to give it some shininess to help avoid accumulating dirt.

If you want a brush-free finish, use a Staalmeester paint brush or a high-quality paint brush, or even a roller to avoid brush marks. It can be sprayed too!

- Affordable
Cons

Best All-In-One Paint for Self-Leveling
Melange ONE Paint
If you’re in the market for all-in-one paint for painting furniture, Melange ONE paint is one of the best! It offers great coverage with two to three coats of paint.
It creates a beautiful finish that’s between matte and satin. It’s the best self-leveling paint out of all of these options, so there is very little texture or brush marks left in the paint once dry.
It is also water-based paint and has a built-in primer like the others. There’s also a wide selection of 95 colors to choose from!
The biggest cons are that it has a 2 to 4-hour recoat time, and I wish the finish was a little bit more satin because matte finishes tend to look dirty and dusty quickly.
Otherwise, it’s definitely worth considering if you want an all-in-one option!
Read through my detailed Melange One Paint Review to learn more.
Pros
- No top coat required
- 2-3 coats for full coverage
- Self-leveling paint
- Easy to use
- Between a matte and satin sheen
- It can be used with a sprayer, brush, or a roller
- Large color selection (95)
- Sticks well
- Great coverage
- Water-based – low VOC
- Self-priming
Cons
- Has a 2-4 hour recoat time

Best All-In-One Paint for Adhesion
Beyond Paint

It’s also water-based, so you don’t have to worry about fumes. And it is UV resistant.
But Beyond Paint only comes in 19 colors – so if you’re looking for more options, this might not be the paint for you – and with its thick consistency, it dries with a lot of texture and brush marks. For the list of colors check out our blog post about the best Beyond All in One paint colors.

Should I prime before using an All-In-One Paint on Furniture?
For best results, always use a stain-blocking, bonding primer like BIN shellac based primer.
If you are painting wood furniture, the tannins from the wood can bleed through the waterbased paint and leave stains on your paint.
A stain-blocking primer is the best way to prevent them and get them to go away. Check out the best primers to stop tannin bleed here.
On slick or shiny furniture, these paints might not stick super well. So a light scuff sand with 220 grit sandpaper and a coat of bonding primer will help the paint stick.

Just because these paints are all in one paints, doesn’t mean you can always get away with just painting them on without any preparation beforehand.

Would you use Beyond Paint on Honey Oak kitchen cabinets. I’ve got the krud kritter and like a colour they offer but Im worried if its going to cover well and be durable.
If I used it on my kitchen cabinets I would make sure to clean the cabinets extra extra well, and scuff sand before painting. I believe it will hold up well. The coverage isn’t as good as other paints, but you can paint more coats on to get full coverage.
Would you recommend Behr Alkyd Paint? I am from Canada.
I personally haven’t tried it. My sister used it on her kitchen and it didn’t hold up as well as Sherwin Williams Emerald Trim Enamel did on the other part of her kitchen. But I think it’s better than some other options.
