There are a lot of great ones out there, and then there are some options that claim to do a lot of amazing things. The thing is, they don’t really live up to all of the claims, and that can be frustrating, especially if you’re just starting out.

Heirloom Traditions Paint

The first one is Heirloom Traditions. It is an all in one paint that is very durable and is really easy to use. I actually even trust that it’s going to be very durable, even without doing my prep work. Check out how to prepare furniture for painting for my usual prep steps.

The downside to me, personally, is that there is a lot of texture when I brush and roll it on. When I do spray it on, it is beautiful. It’s flawless, and it looks fantastic. Here are Heirloom Traditions Paint before and afters so you can see and get inspired by the results.

If texture on your piece bothers you, too, just know that brushing and rolling it on is not going to give you the best results. If you don’t care about texture, then this is probably the easiest option! They have beautiful colors, are really easy to get, and are very budget friendly.

Sherwin Williams Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel

Another fantastic option is the Sherwin Williams Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel. Don’t get it confused with their Emerald line. This Emerald Urethane enamel does not need a topcoat and dries very durable. I don’t know if it’s as durable as Heirloom Traditions, but it levels out beautifully!

You can brush, roll, or spray it on, and it levels out very, very well, much better than Heirloom Traditions does. I also love that it’s very easy to pick up locally. You can also tint it any color, which is a huge bonus.

Sherwin Williams has thousands of amazing colors to choose from. It’s just fantastic. Again, you do not need a topcoat, so this is basically another all in one type product. Here’s my Sherwin Williams Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel review for a closer look at it.

Acrylic Paint

Another option is acrylic paint, specifically General Finishes Milk Paint or Paint Couture Paint. They act very, very similar. Check out my list of the best acrylic paint for furniture for more options.

They do need a topcoat for best durability, but they level out so well. There won’t be any texture if you brush and roll. So, if brushing and rolling are the only ways that you can paint your piece, and you’re really worried about brush marks and texture, this is the type of paint to use for sure! Get more tips on how to paint furniture without brush marks here.

For color selection, Paint Couture has gorgeous colors. General Finishes has very basic colors – more limited than the Sherwin Williams paint line. But it’s very easy to use. It’s very durable on its own, and it’s even more durable when you topcoat it.

This is the only paint out of these that I would topcoat. The other ones – do NOT topcoat. Here are our posts on topcoats for painting furniture and sealing painted furniture for more on this step in the painting process.
