Removing Hardware and Cleaning Bedroom Set

Before you start painting, make sure to take off all the hardware from your bedroom set, like handles, knobs, and hinges. You definitely don’t want to get paint on them or have them in the way! Plus, taking off the hardware gives you a nice clean canvas to work with.

Once you’ve taken off the hardware, it’s time to give your bedroom set a thorough cleaning. We usually use Krud Kutter for this, as it’s great at getting rid of dirt, grime, and any built-up gunk on your furniture. Be sure to wipe down every surface completely so you’ve got a smooth and clean base to paint on.

Filling in Hardware Holes and Sanding

With the hardware off, there will be holes left behind where the old hardware used to be. Since the new hardware did not line up with the old hardware holes, we decided to fill in those old hardware holes with Kwikwood. Here are a few ways of filling holes when replacing cabinet or furniture hardware, including using Kwikwood.

Knead some Kwikwood together and press it into the hole, making sure to overfill it slightly. Once it dries, simply sand down the excess. Here’s how to use KwikWood for a more detailed guide on this step.

You’ll also want to scuff sand the rest of the furniture with 220 grit sandpaper. This will help the paint adhere better and give you a smoother finish. After sanding, be sure to clean off any dust with a vacuum and tack cloth.

Priming Bedroom Set Before Painting

Before proceeding to priming, properly tape off any areas you don’t want to get paint on, such as the drawers. We use painter’s tape and pre-taped plastic for this. Take your time to do this for a neat and clean paint job.

Now it’s time to prime your bedroom set! We like to apply 2 coats of clear shellac primer – using clear shellac is one of the most effective ways how to stop stains from coming through paint. Let each coat dry for at least an hour before applying the next.

Painting Bedroom Set with Homemade Chalk Paint

For our paint, we use a bold and classic black color to give our bedroom set a timeless look. We used Behr paint and color matched it to Iron Ore from Sherwin Williams. Then we made our own chalk paint with this homemade chalk paint recipe we always use!

It’s incredibly easy and budget friendly – just mix 5 tablespoons of calcium carbonate powder with a small amount of warm water until it reaches a glaze-like consistency with no lumps. Then mix that into 1 cup of latex paint. And that’s how you create your very own chalk paint!

We used our Vonforn Paint sprayer to spray the black chalk paint onto our bedroom set. Two coats are usually enough to get rich color and coverage. And since we are using a paint sprayer, you get a smooth, professional finish without any brush marks!

This Vonforn sprayer is one of the best paint sprayers for chalk paint options so if you see yourself working with this type of paint most of the time, it’s definitely worth getting. Here’s our Vonforn paint sprayer review to help you decide if it’s the right one for you.

Topcoat Painted Bedroom Set

Chalk paint is a great option for painting furniture, but it does have its downsides. It’s not very durable and can easily chip or scratch if not properly protected. That’s where the topcoat comes in!

We need to apply a topcoat over our painted bedroom set to protect it from wear and tear, as well as give it a smooth and sleek finish. We like to use Varathane Polyurethane and like our paint, we spray it for a smooth and even application.

Apply 3 coats of poly for maximum protection – let each coat dry completely before moving on to the next. The final coat should dry for 24 hours at least. Here’s more on how to spray polyurethane to make the most out of your topcoat.

After the final coat has dried, it’s time to add some new hardware. We decided to add these new pulls and had to measure and drill new holes for them, but you can also choose to reuse your old hardware if you like (if you reuse your old hardware, you won’t need to fill in the hardware holes like we did in the prep process). Just make sure to clean and polish the hardware before putting them back on. Check out our guide on how to clean old furniture hardware properly here!

With that, we have a beautifully painted and protected bedroom set that looks brand new! Painting furniture can be a bit of work, but it’s definitely worth the effort for the end result. And with our tips and tricks, you can easily transform any old or outdated furniture into something that fits your style and space perfectly.
