Cut Plywood for Snowflake Sign
For the base of our snowflake sign, we used a piece of plywood we cut to size. We made it at least 4″ larger than the snowflake in any direction. This also gives us enough space to create a border around the sign.
If you don’t have a saw at home, you can ask the friendly staff at your local hardware store to cut the plywood for you. Once you’ve got it cut to size, lightly sand down any rough edges or splinters so your sign has a nice, smooth surface.
Fill Holes on Dollar Tree Snowflake Cutout
This snowflake cutout from Dollar Tree has a small hole at the top, where you can put a string through to hang the snowflake. But since we wanted to mount it on our sign, we filled the hole with plastic wood filler to cover it up.
Let the filler dry, then sand it until smooth and flush with the rest of the snowflake. It may take a couple of coats to get it filled and smooth, as ours did, so we worked on other parts of the sign while waiting for the filler to dry.
Paint Plywood White
Next, we painted the plywood sign white with 123 Primer in a spray can. However, we noticed that the spray paint didn’t fully cover the wood grain, so we brushed on some Kilz white chalk paint to get a smooth and solid white base.
We also painted the backside black, so when we eventually change our decor, we can simply flip the sign over and have a blank canvas for another project. You can do the same for your sign or paint it a different color that matches your home decor.
Cut and Stain Frame for Snowflake Sign
Now, onto the frame for our snowflake sign! We used 1″x2″ furring strips to create a border around the plywood. We mitered the corners for a clean and seamless look, then sanded down the edges with 220 grit sandpaper.
Next, we stained the frame with a special walnut water based wood stain using a Zibra paint brush. We brushed on the stain in the direction of the wood grain for a natural and rustic look, then let the stain dry completely. Here’s our tutorial on how to stain wood for more tips and tricks.
Paint Snowflake Black
To contrast the white homemade sign, we painted the snowflake black with Waverly chalk paint in Ink. We used this set of small artist brushes from Zibra, which made painting the intricate details of the snowflake easier and more precise, then let the black paint dry. Here’s how to paint farmhouse signs to learn more techniques on painting signs.
You can also use a different color to paint the snowflake, whichever suits your home decor. You can even go for silver or gold for a more glamorous look. Or add glitter to the paint color you use for some extra sparkle and shine.
Attach Frame to Plywood
Now, it’s time to put everything together! We attached the frame to the plywood using a nail gun and 1.25″ finishing nails. Aim straight when nailing so that the nails go into the plywood and not out the front or back.
Glue Dollar Tree Snowflake to Sign
And after we’ve assembled the homemade Dollar Tree sign, the last step is to glue the black painted snowflake onto the sign. We used MITREAPEL instant superglue for a solid and secure hold. Apply a small amount of glue onto the back of the snowflake, then carefully place it in the center of your sign.
Then, press down firmly to make sure the snowflake sticks to the sign. You can even put an item with some weight on top of it for a few minutes while the glue sets and dries. Once secure, your homemade Dollar Tree snowflake sign is ready to display in your home!
And that’s how you can turn a simple snowflake cutout into a beautiful and festive Christmas sign for the holidays! And you even have the option to change it up for different seasons by simply flipping the sign over and painting a new design.
