Chalk Mineral Paint
Chalk Mineral Paint has several features that make it stand out from other types of paint. Unlike traditional paints, they claim there is no need for sanding, priming, or stripping the surface before painting.
This makes it a convenient and time-saving option for DIYers who want to give their old furniture a makeover without the hassle of extra preparation steps.
If you do not prep before painting your furniture with chalk mineral paint, be aware that your results will not last as long as if you do take some extra time to lightly sand and prime before painting.
Also note that if your furniture is slick, like laminate furniture, or even has a shiny slick finish on it, the chalk mineral paint will not adhere well. It’s best to lightly sand and use one of these best bonding primers before painting.
Its water-based and non-toxic composition makes it safe to use indoors without worrying about harmful chemicals or strong odors. This is especially important for those with allergies or sensitivities to harsh products.
It also means you can complete projects indoors without having to worry about ventilation or strong odors. Plus, it’s easy to clean up with just soap and water, making it a convenient option for anyone.

Besides its easy application process, another unique feature of Chalk Mineral Paint is its ability to adhere to most surfaces. While it works best on wood, it can also be used on metal, glass, and even fabric.
This versatility makes it a great choice for various furniture projects around the house. And with its ultra-matte finish, it’s perfect for creating a vintage or shabby-chic look for your furniture.
So whether you want to revamp an old dresser or add some character to a plain piece of furniture, Chalk Mineral Paint has got you covered!
- Water-based and non-toxic formula
- Adheres to most surfaces
- Ultra-matte finish for a vintage look
- Great coverage!
- Levels out better than most chalk style paints
- Requires a topcoat for durability
- Matte finish is hard to keep clean. Topcoat to change the sheen to satin or semigloss.
Silk All-In-One Mineral Paint
Silk All-In-One Mineral Paint is a newer addition to the Dixie Belle Paint family. It’s an all-in-one paint, primer, and topcoat, which means it eliminates the need for multiple products and you no longer have to wait for all of the different layers of products to dry.
Like Chalk Mineral Paint, it also has a water-based and non-toxic formula that makes it safe and easy to use indoors.
One of the most significant advantages of Silk All-In-One Mineral Paint is its built-in stain blocker, which helps in stopping stains from coming through paint, a common problem water based paints struggle with.
It does work, but for mahogany, oak, or cedar wood, it won’t be enough to block bleedthrough, so you will still need to prime with one of these best stain blocking primers.
Its vast range of colors makes it a versatile option for any project, and its customizable nature allows for unique and personalized results.
And with its exceptional durability and built-in resistance to elements like UV rays, water, mildew, and scuffs, Silk All-In-One Mineral Paint is a top choice for giving furniture and surfaces a long-lasting makeover.
- All-in-one paint, primer, and topcoat
- Great adhesion to furniture surfaces
- Built-in stain blocker to stop bleed through stains
- More durable than the mineral paint and resistant to various elements
- Wide range of colors
- Matte finish that needs topcoated for best durability and cleanability
- Self leveling ability leaves room for improvement
- May be more expensive than other types of paint
How to Use Dixie Belle Mineral Paint
To use Dixie Belle Mineral Paint, and get the best results, start by preparing your furniture for painting. This includes removing any hardware, cleaning the surface, and fixing any damage or imperfections.
For best results, it’s recommended to scuff sand the surface before painting. Learn why sanding before painting furniture is so important for durable, long lasting results.
To stop stains from coming through the paint, and to help the paint stick better, apply a coat of shellac primer. I prefer to use clear shellac for this because it is easy to spray on, and blocks stains very very well.
Then, with a lightly dampened brush, apply 2-3 coats of your chosen color, allowing each coat to dry completely before adding another. Don’t worry if the first coat looks blotchy, as it will even out with the second coat.
While brushstrokes may be visible at first, they will mostly disappear as the paint dries due to its self-leveling properties. After 30 minutes of drying time, Dixie Belle Mineral Paint is usually ready for a second coat.

Then seal the paint with one of these topcoats for painted furniture. Once you’ve sealed the paint, give it 24 hours before reattaching any hardware. It’ll take about 21-30 days for the paint to fully cure.
How to Use Dixie Belle Silk Paint
Using Dixie Belle Silk Paint is similar to Mineral Paint but with a few slight differences. It’s still recommended to clean furniture before painting to remove any dust or grime.
However, since Silk Paint already has a built-in primer, you may be able to skip this step in the preparation process.
Once your furniture is all clean and dry, grab a good quality synthetic brush and apply 1-2 coats of Dixie Belle Silk Paint in nice, long strokes, all going in one direction.
Let that first coat dry for at least 2 hours (or longer if it’s humid). Once it’s fully dry, give it another coat using the same technique.
Lastly, unlike with Mineral Paint, it isn’t as important to topcoat when using Dixie Belle Silk Paint. However, if you want added protection for heavily used surfaces, and if you want to make it easier to clean your furniture, you can apply a topcoat.
Now that you know all about the various types of Dixie Belle Paint and how to use them, you’ve got what it takes to turn your old furniture into something fresh and gorgeous!
Whether you choose Chalk Mineral Paint for a vintage look, or Silk All-In-One Mineral Paint for added durability and convenience, both options offer a wide range of colors, easy application processes, and self-leveling properties for a pro finish.
