Polyurethane is a protective layer that can be applied to a variety of surfaces, including wood, metal, and even concrete. With its ability to resist scratches, stains, and moisture, it’s an ideal choice for sealing furniture pieces. There are two main types of polyurethane: water-based and oil-based.

It’s important to choose the right type for your project based on your desired outcome. If you go for oil based poly, you’ll get a more durable finish that provides a rich, amber color to your wood. It may take longer to dry and can have a strong odor, but it’s worth it for the added protection and beautiful finish.

And for applying oil based polyurethane, spraying is the most efficient method.

Spraying Polyurethane

Spraying polyurethane, whether oil based or water based, is a popular method among furniture painters due to its efficiency and smooth finish.

Spraying can create a more even coat compared to brushing, which can sometimes leave brush marks. It’s also quicker and easier to apply, making it a preferred method for larger pieces of furniture.

There are 2 ways you can spray polyurethane: you can get a polyurethane in a spray can, or you can use a paint sprayer. Spray cans are great for small projects and spot touch-ups, but may not be cost-effective for larger pieces of furniture.

A paint sprayer, on the other hand, is an investment that will save you time and effort in the long run. It allows you to control the spray and coverage more, resulting in a smooth and professional finish. Plus, you can use it for other painting projects as well.

How to Use Minwax Oil Based Polyurethane in Spray Can

To use the Minwax Oil Based Polyurethane in Spray Can, start by shaking the can for at least 2 minutes to make sure that the product is well-mixed. If not, you may end up with an uneven or blotchy finish.

Next, apply thin coats of the polyurethane by sweeping across the surface you’re working on. This helps prevent any runs or drips and gives you a smoother finish. Be sure to wait at least 30 minutes before applying another coat.

For optimal durability, go for at least 3 coats of polyurethane. Make sure to complete all coats within a 2-hour window for best results. And remember, patience is key – let the final coat cure for at least 24 hours before using your furniture piece again.

Minwax Oil Based Polyurethane with Paint Sprayer

Now if you’re working on a larger project or want a more precise and controlled application, consider using a paint sprayer with Minwax Oil Based Polyurethane. The spray version and the quart can of Minwax Oil Based Polyurethane carry the same formula, so you can expect the same level of durability and protection.

Then again, applying the oil based polyurethane with a paint sprayer allows you to more evenly distribute the polyurethane on your wood surfaces for a smoother and more professional finish. Plus, it can save you time and effort compared to using a brush or roller.

The Wagner 250 paint sprayer or the Wagner FLEXiO 3500 paint sprayer are both compatible options for spraying Minwax Oil Based Polyurethane.

How to Use Minwax Oil Based Polyurethane with Paint Sprayer

Before using Minwax Oil Based Polyurethane with a paint sprayer, you may need to thin out the product. For oil based poly, you need to use mineral spirits to thin it out. This will create a smoother finish with less texture bumps.

To make sure your paint sprayer is working correctly, test it out on a piece of cardboard or scrap wood before spraying your project. This will save you time and effort in case the sprayer isn’t working as expected.

When spraying Minwax Oil Based Polyurethane, make sure to use long and continuous movements, overlapping each stroke or pass by one third. This will guarantee an even application and prevent any build-up in certain areas.

We also recommend applying 3 coats of Minwax Oil Based Polyurethane with a paint sprayer. This will provide the best protection against scratches and spills on your wood surfaces. Remember to let each coat dry completely before applying the next one and allow for at least 24 hours of curing time after the final coat.

  1. Hey Susan, I have never used that product so I can’t help you there. It may be as durable, but if you are very concerned about durability, I would go for the real oil based product. I don’t think you need to thin it as most poly is thin enough to spray without thinning. BEst of luck!!
