DIY Projects Made Easy with the SurfPrep Sander

Sanders are total game changers for DIY projects, big or small. They help you smooth out imperfections, prep your surfaces, and make everything feel super polished. For tackling furniture makeovers, a good sander can save you tons of time and effort.
Now, the SurfPrep Sander? It’s easily one of the best out there. If you’re thinking about splurging on one, you’re probably wondering what sets it apart from other sanders and how to really get the most out of it.
So, I’ll break down its awesome features and the types of DIY projects where it can really shine. And by the end of this post, you’ll know if the SurfPrep Sander is the right tool for you and if it’s worth the investment.

Sanding Tight Spaces and Details
So, number one, the SurfPrep sander (Use code RAY10 to get 10% off your order) has a smaller and lower profile than other sanders. This helps to get in between things and in tighter spaces than other options.
For example, stair balusters. These are usually pretty tight. There is no way that you can get in between these with a regular sander, but with the SurfPrep, there is usually a very good chance that you could actually get it in between these.
Of course, on furniture, there are some details that you’ve got to get in between. And most sanders can’t get in those areas, but since the SurfPrep sander is smaller, it is actually possible.
It can easily get into corners and edges, too. For the longest time before I bought my SurfPrep sander, I only had a DeWalt orbital 5 inch round sander. Anytime I needed to work with corners, it would not get into it because it’s a circle.
And so I would have to sand into the corner by hand, and it’s just a pain. The SurfPrep sander gets into the corners and goes clear into the edges. And it’s a lot easier to control than the DeWalt orbital sander.
Lightweight Design for Extended Use
It is also lighter than other sanders, and so this helps with hand fatigue when you are sanding for a long time, especially if you’re not just on a flat surface where gravity helps you.
Like, if you’re working on a horizontal flat surface that the tool is sitting on top of, that’s obviously not an issue. But when you’re trying to sand the side of something that’s standing up, you’re going to want one that is lighter, so you don’t get so tired so fast.
Foam Pads for Curved Surfaces
The other awesome thing with SurfPrep is their foam pads for sanding curved edges. So the brand has a whole entire lineup of foam pads, and I get the half inch foam pads, which are really squishy.

You just attach them to the sander with the hook and loop, like Velcro, which makes it really easy to switch the pads back or switch them out. And these make it possible to tackle details and curves. Check out my guide on how to sand curved surfaces here.
SurfPrep has foam pads for other brands and other types of sanders as well, so this is something that actually can work even if you don’t have their sander. But either way, using them helps you work on curves and details like in kitchen cabinets.
If you think about a regular sander with flat sandpaper, and you are working with curves, it’s going to start sanding aggressively on that curve and change its profile. But with these pads, they are so soft that they can shape to the contour of the curve, and they can actually do it without destroying it.

With their coarse grit foam pads, you can also sand down to raw wood with them. It does take a little bit longer than if you’re using flat sandpaper on a flat surface because of the foam. But it is possible and very helpful, and it’s how I have sanded curves down to raw wood many, many times.
Screens and Sheets for Flat Surfaces
Now, when it comes to flat surfaces, the sanding screens and sheet abrasives that SurfPrep offers are hands down amazing! The abrasive lasts longer, and they don’t tear. These help make your projects go a lot faster and save you a lot of time switching sandpaper out.
You know, you just walk into any store and grab some cheap sandpaper, and that stuff will tear, and the abrasive will be gone within, like, 10 seconds of you using it. You’ll end up using a lot more sandpaper and spending more money.

Dust Free Sanding
It’s also fantastic when you attach your shop vac to the SurfPrep sander. You can sand indoors or in your workshop, and the dust doesn’t go everywhere. Check out my guide on how to attach shop vac to sander here!
I have sanded inside my home for probably about eight years now with my SurfPrep sander, and it has totally changed the way that I can do projects because I can work inside and not create a bunch of dust.
I also use it to sand down spackling or drywall on my walls to keep the dust down. Obviously, I have it attached to my shop vac when I do it.
