This One Change Made My Painted Furniture Look Professional
I used to struggle with streaks and uneven coats, until this one change made my painted furniture look professional! And it can totally transform your projects as well! If you’re tired of spending hours brushing and still not loving the results, you’re in for a game changer.
With our guide on how to use a paint sprayer on furniture here, keep reading to learn how this change can upgrade your DIY game and help you get that smooth, polished look you’ve always wanted!

I used to spend hours trying to get a smooth finish with a brush. Every coat took forever, and it still looked streaky. No matter how carefully I applied it, those unsightly brush marks were always there.
Now, I used to think that paint sprayers were only for pros. You know, the people with huge garages, massive air compressors, and hours to spend figuring them out. I didn’t want to deal with the mess or the hassle.
And I definitely didn’t want to spend hundreds of dollars just to see if I liked spraying. If you’re a beginner and you’ve been nervous about spraying, I get it. I felt the same way. But this thing made it simple.

Using a Paint Sprayer for Furniture
I found this paint sprayer, and it completely changed the game. This sprayer cost less than $60, came with everything I needed, plugs right into the wall, and gave me a finish that looks 100 times better than anything I have ever gotten with a brush.
The first time I ever tried using one, I had no clue what I was doing. I didn’t know how to thin the paint. Could I use water? Did I need mineral spirits? I had no idea.
The first sprayer I bought actually needed an air compressor. And the air compressor that I had was so tiny, it could barely push out any air. It was useless. I spent hours testing the paint, adjusting things, making a huge mess, and still couldn’t get it to spray.

Then I bought another sprayer. This one was a Wagner, and it was actually for stain. So, it wasn’t strong enough. The only way I could spray chalk paint was by using paint filters and thinning it down so much that it barely felt like paint anymore. I had to measure every ounce of water because the sprayer just didn’t have the power to handle thicker paints.
I stuck with spraying, though, because brushing took forever, and honestly, I still preferred the spray on finish over brushing. Even if it did take me an extra 10 minutes to get it set up.
Spraying Paint vs Brushing Paint on Furniture
Think about it: one dresser can take over an hour just to brush on one coat of paint. And even then, the finish has brush strokes all over it, and it just does not look the best. Oh, and brushing on a top coat always turns hazy and looks streaky, which drives me crazy.

Spraying completely changes how your furniture turns out. The paint levels itself out as it dries, so the finish ends up buttery smooth, almost like it was factory made. It doesn’t just look better up close; it feels different, too, when you run your hand across it.
There aren’t ridges or rough spots, unlike what you get with a brush. Even on furniture with tons of grooves, edges, or details, spraying lays the paint down evenly without pulling or leaving thick paint on the edges. That is the worst. With a brush, I’d always fight these little drag lines or end up with spots where the paint dried unevenly.

Would you like to save this?
Spraying also lets me apply thin, even coats, which dry so much faster than heavy brushed on layers. And since the paint isn’t as thick, it’s less likely to chip or peel later, which actually makes your finish more durable long term.
And the overall look is what takes your furniture from a DIY project to something you could actually see in a showroom. I’ve actually had people ask me if my pieces came straight from a high end store, just because that smooth, professional finish makes a huge difference.

So once I figured out how to use a paint sprayer, and how to thin the paint for a sprayer properly, how to clean it quickly, and these few simple tricks to keep it from clogging, spraying became my favorite tool. I honestly could never go back to brushing. It just takes way too long, and the results can’t even compare.
