We found a $5 wooden sign at the thrift store that would fit the transfers. You can use any thrifted picture frame, canvas, or sign that is at least 12″ tall x 24″ wide. For a picture frame with glass, you can paint the glass with this same method.

As you can see, you don’t need expensive materials to get started with this homemade wooden Christmas tree sign. And it’s super easy to do! Follow our guide and you’ll have your own personalized Christmas decor in no time!

Supplies Used for Homemade Wooden Christmas Tree Sign

Prime Wooden Sign Before Painting

We started by taping the edges or frame of the sign with painter’s tape to prevent any paint from getting on the frame. This will make it easier to clean up and give your homemade wooden Christmas tree sign a polished finish.

Next, we primed the sign using Dixie Belle’s Bonding Boss. This product helps prevent bleedthrough stains – bleedthrough can happen with wood that has tannins or natural oils in it. Simply brush on a layer of the Bonding Boss and let it dry first.

Paint Wooden Sign White

After the Bonding Boss has dried, it’s time to paint the wooden sign white. This will serve as the background for our Christmas tree transfers. We used Dixie Belle Silk Paint in Whitecap, which is an all-in-one paint with great coverage. Here’s how to use all in one paint for a more detailed guide on the best way to get a great finish with this paint.

We removed the tape on the frame while the paint was still wet, and then we let the white paint dry for at least 24 hours. We want the paint to be totally dry before adding in the Christmas transfers to avoid any smudging or mistakes.

Apply Transfers on Painted Wooden Sign

Once the white paint was completely dry, we were ready to apply the Christmas tree transfers. We carefully rubbed them onto the painted background, making sure to overlap them slightly to avoid any visible gaps between them.

There was a stick provided, so we used that to properly rub and secure the transfers onto the surface. Then, we slowly pulled off the plastic backing, revealing the Christmas trees now stuck to our white wooden sign.

For the wood frame, we decided to leave it as is with its natural stain. We did sand it down a bit to make it smooth and give it a more rustic look. If you’re using a picture frame or canvas, you can choose to paint it or leave it as is too.

With the homemade wooden Christmas tree sign complete, it’s time to find the perfect spot to display it! You can hang it on a wall, prop it up on a shelf or dresser, or even use it as part of your holiday table centerpiece.
