Yes! You can use a matte topcoat over satin enamel paint. It’ll dull it down a bit and work just fine. 👍

One question though…. can a matte topcoat be applied over a satin paint? I’m actually painting red oak builder special stair rails and balusters. I’ve researched a lot of paint, but the best paint for this kind of project only comes in satin as the lowest gloss choice. I know it’s considered a hard to clean high traffic area. But I actually love the look of flat, matte finishes everywhere. And wondered if I could do a flat or matter topcoat over this satin enamel pain I’m refinishing the handrails and balusters with, to “dull it down” so to speak. I can’t find info on it anywhere! Please help! THANK YOU!

Any paint can turn a little yellow with a topcoat. Personally, I don’t think you would notice it if it did happen. I have a piece that I painted with white chalk paint and sprayed varathane waterbased poly on it 6 years ago. It still looks very white to me!
You could totally do the brushable enamel though if you think it would bug you.

I’m reading many sources stating that topcoating with poly may yellow it. I’m torn between using Varathane ultimate satin, which I have, or purchasing General Finishes brushable white enamel. I appreciate your advice on this. Thank you.
